The people of Solola are a close municipality is on the North side of Atitlan and is a Mayan town. This is a space where they have a social reality that is linked to thier tradition, politics, social life, ritual and bioldivierty.
They grow thier food acording to the weather and the families grow food for themselves and families that are more weatlhy sells thier food to ogher communities, and sometimes they send it internationally or to other cities.
The industry is having probelems because of the low resources the government provides to them. If nothing changes, there will adverse affects in the nation. In Solola there are problems with the food because of the bad administration. There is a lot of insecurity in the communities because of malnutrution.
The resources that they used to have now are devided and they are using all thier Mayan knowledge to fight malnutrition.
In this country it is necessary to understand the way the community works and to listen to proposals from the within the community.
But these big industries are destroying the small communities. They have a lot of seeds - medicine, fruits and vegetables. They have all the knowledge and techniques to feed their families.
They respect thier old traditions and are not taking advantage of what they used to do. A lot of people has lost connection with earth and food and live thier life away from food. But there are still people that conserve this knowledge and customs.
They preserve the tradition of growing the corn field.
