The Port Authority of San Diego had a wonderful celebration renaming the former Spanish landing location Kumeyaay Beach. The San Diego community has long been awaiting this acknowledgment of the importance of the Indigenous roots at the beach. We can’t wait for their first powwow. Check out the Kumeyaay Beach, located at on Harbor Drive.

On July 25th, we headed to the beautiful campus of Cal State Los Angeles to attend the People’s Home Powwow. The event was filled with traditional dancing, arts and crafts, and critical social services. I was thoroughly impressed with the amount of attention the Native community used to support mental health services, especially with cultural sensitivity. The event even had emergency food and cleaning supplies. The consideration for the different plights of our community was shown there respectively. Overall, the event was worth braving the heat. It was festive and meaningful.

This summer has been filled with stellar meetings of the minds in the Native American community. At a meeting held at the WorldBeat Center, guests of the incomparable Makeda Dread included Pala Rez radio Boss Eric Ortega and Bob Levis, who shared integral strategies to help our community. The other participants included reporter Julian Do of Ethnic Media Services, who continues to promote the Native community. It is honorable to meet with great minds with active solutions for societal ailments to improve Native life.
