Urgent requests for support from Indigenous elders!

***ON THE GROUND SUPPORT NEEDED IN WINNEMUCCA, NEVADA***

Elders of the Winnemucca Indian Colony face home demolition and violence from Bureau of Indian Affairs officers. If you’re able to support them on the ground, please contact neweneensokopa@protonmail.com. Donations can be sent via Venmo to @DEFENDWIC and via Cash App to $DEFENDWIC.

Context on the situation:

  • This decades-long fight has been escalated by the issuing of eviction notices and the destruction of elders' property who have lived on the colony for decades. Claims that this is necessary to clean up the neighborhood is in reality a way to remove elders from their homes and continue of the genocide of Indigenous people. Residents question the legitimacy of the colony council whose members do not live on the colony as well as the morality and legality of ousting elders and families from their only home. ***SHEEPHERDERS, SHEARERS, ON THE GROUND SUPPORT REQUESTED***

Dineh elders of Big Mountain in Arizona who continue to resist relocation are requesting support with shearing, herding sheep, homestead/vehicle/fence repairs, wood/water hauling, etc. Please share this call-out, help bring awareness to your community of their ongoing resistance, read up on Big Mountain Dineh history, and organize mutual aid. You can reach the sheepherders collective and get connected to a homesite to support by emailing bmsheepherders@gmail.com.

Context on the situation:

  • Dineh peoples face unyielding threats of evictions, complete denial of rights, confiscations of livestock, and destruction of their prayer gathering places. Since 1974, genocidal federal relocation policy has forced 14,000 Dineh people from their ancestral homeland in order to gain access to the mineral resources of Black Mesa - billions of tons of coal, uranium, and natural gas. Peabody Coal Company’s operations in the region are causing or contributing significantly to a range of groundwater-related problems, with profound environmental, cultural, and religious implications for local tribal communities. To learn more please visit supportblackmesa.org and email bmsheepherders@gmail.com if you’d like to help on the ground.
