Soulaan is a new name that many Black Americans are using to identify their own lineages as separate from recent immigrants from the Caribbean of Africa.
Soulaani identity largely includes the Black American people of the US Southeast. Most Soulaani people descend from persons enslaved in the United States.
Many Soulaani claim descent from the Indigenous people of the southeastern US, and also from African captives brought to North America prior to 1808. Soulaani people may even have some European ancestry. It is about lineal (lineage) descent, not blood quantum.
Soulaani people are from the soil of America, and the literal soul of U.S. culture.
The term Soulaan overlaps the terms FBA/Foundational Black America, and many use the terms interchangeably.
