Longtime former Chief of the Ramapough Nation, Dwaine Perry, filed suit claiming his ouster was illegal. The Ramapough Lenape of about 5,000 people, are a mountain tribe recognized by the state of New Jersey, though some of their land and membership lies in New York State.
Chief Perry has served as Ramapough Chief since before 2014, and was suspended by the Tribal council on May 27. On June 13, The Tribal Council issued a statement claiming that Perry had blocked elections since 2014.
Current Acting Chief is Vincent Mann of the Turtle Clan in Ringwood, NJ.
