In the Senate, I am proud to sit on the Energy and Natural Resources committee. That means Nevadans have a seat at the table on issues like conservation, water use, and public lands.
Nevada has the highest percentage of land managed by the federal government of any state, so I take my oversight of public lands extremely seriously. I also recognize the deep connection that Nevada’s 28 federally-recognized Tribes have with our land. I will always work with my Tribal partners to ensure I am being a responsible steward of our public lands.
Recently, President Trump nominated Steve Pearce to be the Director of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Steve Pearce has a decades-long record opposing public lands, including our treasured national parks and national monuments of great significance to Tribes. Immediately, I heard from Nevadans, from hunters to conservationists to day hikers, including Tribal members, that they forcefully opposed his nomination.
And so did I. I voted against Steve Pearce’s nomination to be BLM Director on behalf of all Nevadans that treasure our public lands and demand their protection.
As a lifelong Nevadan and your voice on the ENR committee, I will never support mass selloffs of our cherished public lands.
