For the first time in our nation’s history, the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree on display for the holidays in Washington, D.C. comes from the Silver State’s own Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, and I could not be any prouder. The tree, named Silver Belle, is adorned with thousands of ornaments hand-crafted by Nevada families that carry symbols of home to our nation’s capital, from the desert tortoise and the mountain bluebird to Lake Tahoe and the lights of the Strip.
Nevada’s Tribal communities were involved in the planning process for Silver Belle’s journey from Nevada to D.C., and the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California blessed the tree before it left the Silver State. Tribal members helped decorate the tree, including the Dresslerville Women’s Circle, which designed a beautiful, quilted tree skirt.
As I watched the People’s Tree light up the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, I was moved by what this moment means for Nevada and for our country.
This year has tested us. Natural disasters, economic strain, and uncertainty have weighed on families across the nation. Nevadans, including our Tribal communities, understand these hardships all too well. We’ve weathered wildfires and droughts that have pushed our communities to the brink.
Yet time and again, we’ve rebuilt stronger and more united. Silver Belle stands as a reminder of that resilience.
This tree comes from a patch of the forest threatened by the Davis Fire last year. This fire burned for over 18 days, forcing Nevadans to evacuate not knowing if they would have a home to come back to. But because of the hard work and sacrifice of our firefighters, Guardsmen, and first responders, our communities stood strong.
I can’t think of a better story to represent the American spirit. In times of hardship and suffering, we always find a way to forge ahead and prevail. That is the story of our country.
As Silver Belle lights up the Capitol this season, may it remind Americans everywhere that even in difficult times, hope always returns. From my family to yours, may your holiday season be filled with light and warmth. Merry Christmas!
