Ruth-Ann Thorn says the ancestors spoke to her when she first got the idea to host and produce a fashion show highlighting Native designers. “It happens all the time. I come up with an idea, and the ancestors take over. I have to follow that lead.”
Thorn is the owner of Native Star, the first luxury boutique devoted to creators of unique fashion, art, beauty, and design.
The groundbreaking event aims to celebrate the talent of Native designers, including artists, stylists, models, and photographers, during American Heritage Month.
What many people may not know is that there are dozens of Native artists, and the number is growing, especially among younger generations.
When Ruth-Ann did a callout for participants, the response was so overwhelming, she had to turn some designers away.
Thorn is a proud member of the Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians, 45 miles northeast of San Diego.
Thorn is no stranger to art and entertainment. She’s been an art dealer for 27 years, owned and operated art galleries, produced films, and is an entrepreneur in the beauty business.
Thorn is adamant about raising awareness about her people and culture and breaking stereotypes. She hopes to encourage the youth not to fear life outside the reservation and mainstream culture. And she hopes to lead the charge in Native American art and fashion.”To rise, we have to look at ourselves from a different point of view.”
Featured designers include: Bitterwater for Redhouse, Breezy Design, Kayla Lookinghorse, Lumens Brand, Patrica Michaels, Penny Singer, Randee Boogie, RoTree Design, and Sage Mountain Design.
The event takes place in San Diego’s historic Gaslamp District in front of the Native Star Boutique, 631 Fifth Avenue, on November 7 and 8 p.m. An opening prayer and traditional drum circle will open the event.
VIP seated tickets are limited. But standing room only is open and free to the public. For more information, visit Native-Star.com or call 619-895-3027.
