“Indian Voices” joins Native people from across Indian Country in honoring this remarkable role model
Surrounded by a multitude of mourners and friends, Ernie Stevens was laid to rest Saturday afternoon on his beloved homeland of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin.
It is with gratitude that a community of journalists had the opportunity to learn and share Chairman’s Steven’s gentle strength and discipline that he carried with him while developing and leading the National Indian Gaming Association. As an influential leader in modern Native American economic development, he was also supportive and encouraging of endeavors related to his lifelong passion for Trial Sovereignty and independence. His focus and determination was unwavering in the face of all obstacles. This highly sculpted approach to journalistic storytelling is a needed skill set tool to cultural preservation. Historians, journalists and cultural preservationists are indebted to Ernie Stevens and committed to carrying on and honored to perpetuate his legacy.
