The Stovall Foundation celebrated 90 years of service on Sunday, August 30. Produced by the Stovall Foundation Board of Directors with the able assistance of Splendid Affairs, Inc., the anniversary celebration was held at the Carondelet House in Los Angeles. Friends, family and community gathered to honor what the Stovall Foundation represents and what it has represented since 1934.
The foundation was established by Dr. Leonard Stovall, a beloved healer who organized colleagues to confront the tuberculosis epidemic at a time when Black people were being denied adequate care. Pushing through racism and civil injustice with an unwavering commitment to those without resources, Dr. Stovall built something that has endured for nine decades. The evening’s program carried a James Baldwin quote that captured his spirit and the spirit of the night – “If you know whence you came, there is really no limit to where you can go.”

The 90th Anniversary Gala was intentionally framed as a “friend-raiser” which is a concept rooted in the foundation’s belief in the power of collaboration. “You make friends before you need them,” shared Dr. Lance Williams, President of the Board of Directors, “then when you have a need to collaborate, you have people there that can help you.” Williams provided a formal introduction of the foundation and spoke to its ongoing mission to improve access to housing, healthcare, education and technology for seniors and under-resourced residents of greater Los Angeles. “Housing, healthcare, humanity is essentially our vision,” he said.
